WELCOME!!!

Welcome to the 20ish & 30ish Boston Book Club blog! It will probably be a more "hoppin" spot after our first meeting, but if you guys want to start talking and getting to know each other- possibly start exchanging book ideas, go right ahead! I will be on here talking too! See you can be as involved or uninvolved in the club as you want. But so far I am having a lot of fun setting this all up!
As of today we have 28 members! :) Not too bad for 3 day old club! :)

Hi, I'm Joe Zabinski, as you can see. Currently reading a few things. The Book of my Life by Gioramo Cardano, an autobiography of sorts by a 16th-century man from Pavia, Italy. A Kurt Vonnegut novel. Underworld by Don Delillo. Very descriptive, rich book. Anyway, see you all in June!

I'm loving Black Dogs, I'm a big Ian McEwan fan. My fav is his masterpiece, Atonement. The film will be out later in the year starring Keira Knightley.

Hello, everyone. I'm new to book clubs, so if I make a faux pas, please don't throw any hardcovers. I'm presently reading "Madness and Civlization" by Foucault - absolutely fascinating. Recently, all my books have been on the Middle Ages and the early modern period. I'd love to get back into some fiction, however. There are many classics my youth passed by (call it rebellion, disinterest, or sheer negligence) that I'd love to have an excuse to read. I admit, I rarely find much modern fiction interesting (there are, of course, exceptions), but I am willing to try anything so don't take that as an automatic poo-pooing of anything written after 1900 (though I will object strenuously to Toni Morrison).

While I admit I've only read "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, I'm interested in knowing why you object so strenously to her books ?

As for why I dislike Toni Morrison: I find her writing to be atrocious drivel. It's boring, sexist, pedantic, preachy and feels like literary ma- well, you know what I'm about to say there. In sum, I don't like. It's not a style or voice I enjoy, nor do the storylines engage me. Paradise I read for junior seminar in college. All the girls loved it (excpet me). All the guys hated it. If you can only speak to one gender group, your writing is missing something major.
